Yes, we all believe in a helping hand-up from a spill, we just do not believe in a hand-out that is demanded from us by folks with a sense of entitlement!
Since when does the Tea Party endorse candidates?!? Michael Barone has gone out on a limb, without the blessing of the movement he claims to represent, and is seriously in danger of destroying everything we have worked for.
My family has been involved with the Central Ohio Tea Party and its affiliates since its inception I find the claims made by this article to be grossly improper. We stand for lower taxation, limited government, and individual freedoms. We deal in facts. We are fed up with the rhetoric and spin that has become the common currency of our opponents. This article and its untruths are a huge step backwards for us.
Steve Stivers has faced his fair share of criticism, but not because of his fiscal conservative credentials. There has been little doubt that he has been a staunch fiscal conservative throughout his career. He has consistently voted for lower taxes, less government, and more individual freedoms. These are facts.
I have talked with Mr. Stivers at several Tea Party and 912 events over the last several months (yes he has made an effort to meet us), and while I may not agree with every view he has I know he has ideas for rolling back government and shares the principles we have fought for. He has served our country in Operation Iraqi Freedom, he did a commendable job as my State Senator, and he has been forthright and accessible as a candidate. Whether or not we as individuals choose to support him or not, he does not deserve this slander.
Should we not believe he is also fed up with our current representation? Should we honestly crucify a man for identifying with our principles? Just how is he stealing our money, as you claim?
You should be ashamed of yourself Mr. Barone. Our movement holds itself to a higher standard. Integrity and truthfulness are foundational.
By the way, I would encourage everyone to email Mr. Barone at mbarone@columbus.rr.com or mbarone@stgabrielradio.com to tell him how you feel about his deceptive and unauthorized letter.

The Columbus Tea Party does not endorse and is not endorsing Mr. Adams nor Mr. Stivers. We have for some time been trying to get YOU (the Tea Party Movement) to contribute content to our site. As long as it’s newsworthy and liberty oriented, without hatred, bigotry, or profanity, it’s acceptable. This is offered to candidates as well and was offered to Adam Kuhn of Mr. Stivers camp. Mr. Barone, jumped on board to promote his candidate.
HOWEVER — there is one point you made that we fully agree with and we are at serious odds with Mr. Stivers about: co-opting the Tea Party Movement without the Blessing of the Tea Party. Should Mr. Adams file a complaint with the elections board regarding the flier that was photoshopped — fraudulent, false advertising that implies the Tea Party supports Mr. Stivers — should this happen we will support him fully and publicly.
The Tea Party Brand is not the legitimate right of the ORP to use on all their mailers. We are a network of volunteers who spend countless hours away from things we would rather be doing, volunteers who donated thousands of dollars to help build this movement. We are building a BRAND IDENTITY that means something. That stands for something. That should have some integrity to its use – whether you agree with it or not. And we will not allow anyone to willy-nilly use it for their own benefit without our approval. We will fight to own the brand – especially when it’s been manipulated through photoshop to CO-OPT the energy, time, money, and spirit of those who are tired of the 2 parties thinking we belong to them. Do you think Disney might object to us photoshopping a Gadsden Flag atop Cinderella’s castle and using it for our own promotion?
I have asked Mr. Barone to make it more clear in his post that this article did NOT come from the Columbus Tea Party. And I have also indicated the same to Mr. Stivers camp. However, Mr. Barone’s post was authorized in the manner I mentioned in my opening paragraph. He is not part of Columbus Tea Party leadership nor our communications department. Consider it a letter to the editor.

I attended the original “we surround them” event hosted by Glenn Beck and every tea party event.
I have attended many 912 events, and I when Stivers has shown up, I have been extremely disappointed with his refusal to take a stand on most issues.
I have never seen a sign endorsing Stivers at any event and his photo-shopping his sign into the tea party event, is in my opinion dishonest and shows a lack of integrity.
If he truly wanted to support the conservatives should have attended the “Vote No on Health Care Rally” in front of Kilroy’s office or the Sherrod Brown “town halls” with us true conservatives.
Sadly, Stivers and the Local Republican party treat us with as much contempt as the Democrats do. Glenn Beck has been warning us of this. He has been focusing on moral values lately and he has warned the tea party movement to wake up and stop being co-opted by progressive Republicans.
Unfortunately by endorsing Stivers, again, the Republicans are handing Kilroy another easy win!
Stivers is nothing more than another Meghan McCain progressive!

My Answer: The Columbus TEA Party has not endorsed John Adams (or Steve Stivers).
I am only a Media Advisor – Pro Tem for John Adams. I am not even “Officially” John’s Media advisor. Pro tem means temporary.
I am not an official from the TEA Party. I love the TEA Party, but I am not claiming to be part of the leadership. I am a concerned citizen who has been invited to voice my opinion and try to help John Adams get his message out. My Answer: Which claims are you labeling grossly improper? What exactly are we disputing? I really would like to know I’m not trying to offend you; I want to understand your position. I’m claiming the following:
1. Mr. Stivers has allowed a picture to be sent in the mail which bears a false image of a sign which is not in the original picture.
2. I’m claiming that the photo-shopped “Vote for Stivers” sign implies that there are specific TEA Party Members who must have created the sign and placed it in open view while attending the 2009 Columbus TEA Party Rally. This was done to appear as if Mr. Stivers has the support of those (and other) TEA Party Members.
3. I’m claiming that this is a form of deception or manipulation since the picture is not “real” or “true” and the image has been digitally altered. I call that a “visual lie” because it conveys an untruth visually.
4. I’m claiming that this is a form of stealing since Mr. Stivers did not pay for the sound system, the stage, the publicity, the probable permits, or the good will/permission of the TEA Party leadership & members to use their images and likenesses in his Political Advertisement.
5. I’m claiming the GOP paid to send the doctored image in the US Mail.
I believe I am correct in these things that I’m claiming. Feel free to write me back if you disagree. That is the beauty of our system you can agree to disagree and still be friends. Keep in mind we need each other to vote out Kilroy in November.

My answer: No one that I know saw Mr. Stivers at the three TEA Party events I mentioned in my article. Perhaps you did meet him at others; I do not dispute that possibility. No one that I know saw him at the 2009 April 15th Columbus TEA Party Rally which is where the image in question was created.

My answer: Which of the claims I have listed above is slander? A statement must be false to be slanderous. To my knowledge nothing I am claiming is false. I too would commend Mr. Stivers for his Military Service to our great country. But that has nothing to do with the claims my posting makes.

My answer: First, I do not write deceptive letters. (See claims #1-#5 above). Second, I am completely “authorized” to write my opinion. I asked for and was given an opportunity to post to the http://www.ColumbusTEAParty.com web site. My letter was submitted and held for approval before it was posted, by the Columbus TEA Party leadership.
I am most grateful to them for allowing us both to freely express our opinions and make our noted claims.
Please remember that you and I are on the same side come November. My opinion is that John Adams http://www.johnadams2010.com is the better candidate and the better fit for the Columbus TEA Party voter consideration.

John Adams has asked me to clarify that he also was not at the 2009 April Rally. His first TEA Party Rally was the one in Washington DC last summer. This was my misunderstanding, not his mistake.

(Columbus, Ohio) – Independent and Republican Ohio voters overwhelmingly believe the state is on the wrong track, and a majority of Ohioans surveyed have a positive perception of Ohio Right to Life, according to poll numbers released today by Ohio Right to Life Society. Also, a majority of Republicans consider themselves “Tea Party patriots,” while Democrats and independent voters do not.

John Adams is politics as usual, case in point Mr. Barone’s post. Mr. Adams has no plan or platform. All he has is negative attacks in hopes to try and cover that fact up. He is the worst type of candidate and the one that voters most often complain about. His so called “campaign” is nothing more than hate. This is something that the MSM continues to try and link to the TEA Party movement week after week. It’s sad that he and his campaign do not recognize this as evidence by the previous post that shows the Dispatch trying to link Kilroy’s general election opponent Stivers to the obvious infiltrator at the tax day rally. People like John Adams and his campaign are playing right into their hands and will give our movement the black eyes that Democrats and the MSM hope to give us.
Mr. Higgins was correct TEA Party stands or Taxed Enough Already. It’s sad that people like John Adams and his campaign are trying to change it so they can try to identify with it and draw support from our movement because they have no other means of voter support.
What Mr. Barone fails to mention intentionally is that Steve Stivers is endorsed by the NRA with an “A” rating and the NFIB not to mention ALL three Republican County Parties (Union, Madison and Franklin) unanimously. So RINO doesn’t fit at all and name calling is what Democrats do Mr. Barone when they don’t have any other argument to make. Also excluded from Mr. Barone’s second attack is that John Adams has exceptions on Life as well. As a Pro Life Catholic I am supporting Steve Stivers because he has a 100% PRO LIFE voting record in 6 years in the State Senate. That’s right a 100% PRO LIFE VOTING RECORD!! And to add to that he has a 0% approval rating from NARAL!! Both facts that were omitted from Mr. Barone’s second attack. As a Christian do you believe lying is a sin? I digress. Also missing from Mr. Barone’s attack is that in my limited time online I have found articles from the 2008 campaign where Stivers is on record as saying marriage is between a man and a woman. Oh and Mr. Barone points to the survey that Stivers took but apparently he didn’t read it because Stivers expressly points out that he is AGAINST Taxpayer funded abortion. Mr. Adams attacks have gone so far as to attack Ohio Right to Life as well a group that I am a member of. Although you can no longer find that on Mr. Adams website because he was obviously ashamed of that new low in his campaign and took it down.
My last point is Mr. Adams at a 9/12 candidate’s night did not know what Article 1 section 8 of the constitution was about (Powers given to Congress). As someone that is fed up with Congress over stepping their authority (Health Care Mandates) I will not support a candidate that doesn’t know the issues or the constitution. I’m sure when he isn’t attacking people Mr. Adams is a nice man but lies and attacks are no way to run a campaign unless you are Mary Jo Kilroy and I know our movement is better than that, which is why I agree with Mr. Higgins that we should embrace Mr. Stivers who continues to talk about our issues.

It should go without saying, but an Op-Ed is not a place to post your press releases. Please have some class.
Further, your continued reliance on a fictitious character (“Jack Union”) to smear your opponents is deceitful and wrong. You have been called out multiple times, in multiple forums, for attempting to mislead voters through negative attacks under that name. It is well-known to many of us in the Tea Party Movement, and I know you have been asked to stop before.
Your continued use of this tactic is very revealing of your character and is proof enough to any potential voters that you cannot be trusted.
You haven’t seen people smearing you for being a “stay at home dad” who doesn’t live in the district. You haven’t seen either your primary opponent (Christopher Macisco), John Adams, or Ralph Applegate creating pseudonyms to criticize you for advocating Dennis Kucinich’s “Department of Peace.” You haven’t seen Steve Stivers campaign against you for being a perennial candidate for various offices. Why must you be so negative?
We are tired of the deceptions and negative attacks of the current liberal Democratic leadership in our country. We certainly don’t want to elect someone that does the same thing.

I can’t justify allowing Kilroy to have another term just because I disagree with Stivers on one issue. We need to remember Ronald Reagan’s
“Big Tent” philosophy. Someone that agrees with me 98% of the time is superior to someone, like Kilroy, who disagrees with me 98% of the time.
Are YOU willing to see our Constitution trashed and our economy ruined because conservatives decided to pursue petty arguments and non-issues instead of standing up against our REAL enemies?
Also, Stivers does not support abortion on demand, as you claim. He supports abortion as an option only in cases of rape, incest, or health of the mother. That is why he has a 100% pro-life voting record in his 6 years as a State Senator. We can’t outlaw abortion until we take care of Roe V. Wade so I’ll take my chances with a conservative that supports limited government, lower taxes, and restricting abortion over Mary Jo Kilroy any day.

Poll: Independent Voters Wary of Anti-Family Government Agenda
COLUMBUS – Independent voters report a growing skepticism toward the long-term positive impact of current government policies, according to a survey released today by the Ohio Right to Life Society. In the final installment of its Ohio Cultural Index, the group found independent and Republican voters share many of the same views on the direction of the state and the corresponding impact to its culture. Also, the survey found a majority of Ohioans continue to have a strong faith in God, oppose taxpayer funding for abortion and believe abortions have a negative impact on the women who have the procedure.
“After a tumultuous year in which taxpayer funding for abortion was at the center of a national debate over health care, opposition to it has grown from 67 percent three months ago to 72 percent now,” said pollster Fritz Wenzel. “The political implications could be tremendous for those Ohio congressional representatives who voted for the federal health care bill, as their opponents will have a powerful issue to use on the campaign trail this fall.”
The index’s significant findings include:
• 80% of Ohioans surveyed strongly believe in God;
• 51% oppose abortion;
• 54% believe abortion has a negative effect on women who have them;
• 71% oppose use of taxpayer dollars to pay for abortion;
• 47% believe some elderly or very sick patients will be denied health care because of cost factors;
• 48% believe entertainment today negatively impacts families;
• 44% believe government policies are harming traditional family values;
• 56% believe public schools undermine values taught at home; and
• 53% believe families do a worse job of developing character than a generation ago.
As much as I hate Steve Finger-in-the-Wind Stivers, John Adams doesn’t have what it takes to beat Kilroy.

Would you say the following of him:

Even though Stivers, Adams, Macisco, and Applegate did not smear Mr. Ryon, you did just by bringing it up.

I think Travis was a little overwrought, or should I say emotional; nevertheless, let’s stipulate that Marx was an idiot, resume logical thinking, and get back on focus. As the June deadline for the petition drive looms, let us pledge that as canvassers and signers that we will allow every potential signer 72 hours to consider the language of the amendment (not the summary) before signing. Second, let us pledge that in our campaign for November that we insist that all Ohioans intending to vote will have studied the amendment (in its original language) at least 72 hours before casting the ballot. This is the new standard of what we expect of those who constitutionally represent us in governing. Let us lead our representatives by example. Can we demand less of ourselves when we step forward to govern by the initiative process?
I apologize that I did not think of these things in the first 5 minutes that it takes for most voters to completely grasp the content and import of the proposed amendment. I first posted over 2 months ago. As I read the amendment today, it occurs to me that earned income is the lynch pin for how federal tax consequences can be triggered by the recently passed health care reform bill. So, I have three questions, which I suspect could be easily answered by others.
1) Assuming I am correct, and please tell me if I am not, if I have no income from earning activities, but rather get by on withdrawing from savings and investments, then I am not mandated to have insurance under penalty of missing out on the tax credit that others will get because they have health insurance. Denial of the tax credit is what the amendment includes as “indirect compulsion”, correct? Now, if I am not mandated, then I have successfully evaded the health care requirement. Thus I have the freedom to avoid the penalty and there is no need to amend the Ohio Constitution, since, as by the analogy of home schooling, there is no mandate in Ohio for school children to attend a public or private school.
2) Please take the next question in the hypothetical context that after March 19, 2010, there is massive reform of the medicare laws. Assuming I am correct, and please tell me if I am not, anyone who is employed by self or others pays into the medicare fund. Also, many senior citizens and the disabled are “indirectly compelled” to pay for certain parts of medicare if they want to have affordable health care. Would this amendment free employed Ohioans from paying the medicare tax and allow seniors and the disabled to claim total medicare coverage for free?
3) Why is this proposal an amendment to the Ohio Constitution? Based on the theory that any Ohio law supported by the states rights protections in our national constitution, why wouldn’t this proposal be just as worthy as a statute, rather than as a change in the fundamentals of Ohio’s progressive “1912 Constitution”?
I am very impressed by the confidence of those who have responded so far in this forum. Surely they and those who copied this proposal from other states and who defended it before the ballot board and the supreme court will be able to answer promptly, as I am no doubt among the tiniest minority of those who just keep coming up with questions about this proposal. I hope nothing I said killed the effort this year. I just heard we failed to get enough signatures. Maybe if we start earlier, we can give people more time, like 72 hours, before they sign the petition, to read and consider the actual words of the proposed amendment. By the way, with a delay now forthcoming, will the date in the amendment (March 19, 2010) have to be changed to consider what laws might be passed in Ohio that would affect health care? In that case, would the 100,000 signatures on this first attempt no longer be valid?
Constitutional Conservatives still have an option on November 2nd. You can support David Ryon the Constitution Party Nominee for U.S. Representative in Ohio’s 15th Congressional District.
Mary Jo must go but why Strike-Out with Stivers? If you are a conservative republican, conservative independent, conservative democrat or conservative libertarian then vote for David Ryon for Congress. I ask every conservative to learn about the Constitution Party and read the platform it will sound very familiar to you. The Constitution Party sticks to its principles and platform. It is time for a change; Don’t let the major party leadership fool you. A vote for Stivers is a vote for Kilroy and vice-versa. They have you bouncing back and forth always playing good cop and bad cop then reversing their roles. The end result is nothing changes.
In 2010, choose neither of them because even if one congressional seat is held by another party other than the two major parties they will be forced to listen or they will realize their power and jobs are in jeopardy.
Central Ohio can tell the major parties leadership if you don’t straighten up your act; we will take away your jobs and give the Constitution Party a chance to fix our because the major parties have had over 100 years to get it right.

I was reading Clarence Thomas’ opinion in this week’s Second Amendment case. Interestingly, Thomas brings up a whole new route for federal authority, that confounds the debate. Thomas gives a wonderful history of the Immunities and Privileges clause of the 14th Amendment. It appears that if the national government grants a privilege to citizens, it cannot be denied by a state. If health care is such a privilege, then the proposed amendment to Ohio’s constitution would be contrary to the 14th Amendment.
Nope. Everything stays the same. The beauty of the amendment is even state and local governments cannot pass/enforce new laws that violate the amendment.
“Gosh darn it,” I bet you were hoping local politicians could derail this thing weren’t you?
Never thought of that John. Sounds like the Brunnifer argument, namely that this amendment would “deny the people the right to be forced.”
Other privileges the Feds could warrant:
1) The privilege to live in a profanity-free society — could trump the 1st Amendment
2) The privilege to live without fear someone (other than government) has a gun — throw out that pesky 2nd Amendment
3) The privilege to have a free education, free housing, and a job — throw out that silly constitution and let’s dust of the USSR docs.
What a brilliant Progressive idea. Instead of calling things rights, let’s rename them “Privileges” and somehow configure those to be greater than rights, because as we know a driver’s license isn’t a right it’s a privilege, thus secondary to rights…. hmmmm — we’re really going to have work on this. Give it a couple decades maybe, when the language has been so bastardized, convuluted, and meaningless, that today’s school children will heartily agree.
Brilliant John. Only a progressive would consider an unconstitutional mandate that fines and imprisons people as being a privilege. BTW: Our amendment won’t prevent YOU from signing up for that golden Obamacare. It’ll just prevent the rest of us from being jailed when we don’t.
